Description

Hypertension is an important risk factor for the development and worsening of many complications of diabetes, including diabetic eye disease and kidney disease. It affects up to 60% of people with diabetes.

Having diabetes increases the risk of developing high blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems, as diabetes adversely affects the arteries, predisposing them to atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis can cause high blood pressure, which, if not treated, can lead to blood vessel damage, stroke, heart failure, heart attack, or kidney failure.

ACE inhibitors like Perindopril are used as first-line, as several agents in the class have been clinically shown to be superior to other classes of drugs in the reduction of morbidity and mortality.

Perindopril is indicated for the treatment of hypertension and heart failure. Many clinical trials have demonstrated its efficacy in cardiovascular disease, including the treatment of hypertension, heart failure and post Myocardial Infarction (MI).

The beneficial effects of Perindopril on cardiovascular remodeling are well documented. These benefits include improvement of arterial compliance in large arteries; restoration of the structure of small resistance arteries; restoration of flow-mediated coronary vasodilatation in hypertensive patients and the reversal of endothelial dysfunction in patients with hypertension and heart failure.
